This is my favorite poem, by the wonderful Paul Eluard. I’ve done a (very rough) English adaptation below.
***
My living death
In my sorrow, nothing moves
I wait, no one will come
Not in daytime, not at night
Nor ever more than what I used to be
My eyes have been separated from your eyes
They’re losing their trust, they’re losing their light
My mouth has been separated from your mouth
My mouth has been separated from pleasure
And from the feeling of love, and the meaning of life
My hands have been separated from your hands
My hands let everything go
My feet have been separated from your feet
They will no longer move forward, there’s no more path
They will no longer know my weight, nor rest.
I was meant to see my life finish
With yours
My life in your power
That I thought infinite
And in the future my only hope is my tomb
Like yours, surrounded by an indifferent world
I was so close to you that I am cold next to others.

It’s not weird at all. It became my favorite poem after my first reading. 🙂
